RECYCLING

Students from the Life Skills Class go to all of the classrooms to gather the paper recycling everyday. They empty the paper from the recycling boxes into paper recepticles on wheels. Finally, the paper is taken outside to the large paper recycling bin. Students also recycle plastic bottles and cans for the High School. They help the High School to earn extra money which goes to the Environmental Club. The following animoto project completed by a few of our students shows the students recycling at Hampton High School.

THANKSGIVING RECIPE BOOKLETStudents in the Life Skills Classroom spent the month of November compiling a book of favorite family Thanksgiving recipes. The first step was listing traditional foods from a typical Thanksgiving meal. Next, each student developed a shopping list of items (3 to 5) with their families, estimated the cost of the items and then purchased these items on a shopping trip to Giant Eagle. Food items purchased would be part of the family's Thanksgiving meal. As a culmination to this activity, each student brought in a favorite family Thanksgiving recipe and shared it with the other students. Finally, everyone took home a booklet of Thanksgiving recipes!
HIGH SCHOOL- MIDDLE SCHOOL PEN PALSThe Life Skills students have expressed themselves through writing activities, during the second quarter of the 2011-2012 school year. One of the projects was to write to a "Pen Pal" in Direct Instruction at the Middle School to give them information about the High School. This exchange has continued between the two groups of students. Students have shared their interests, wants and needs. The High School students have given the Middle School students advice and information specific to the High School. They have shared their favorite classes and special teachers.
"PIE" DAYThe Life Skills students explored and created their own "Pie Day." Mrs. Romea demonstrated how to make an apple pie from scratch. We talked about the many options available with pie crusts, such as those that are frozen and already in the pan. In addition, there are frozen pie crusts that need to be thawed and then rolled out and finally fitted to the pan. This is the type of crust that the students used to make their own pies. The students either ate the pie in school or took it home to share with their families. Mrs. Romea also shared her pie crust recipe with the students and their families. Of course, we used this opportunity to study fractions. We discovered how many pieces of pie we needed to serve everyone. We cut the pie in half, then fourths, then in eights. Our "Pie Day" was a great opportunity to practice everyday life skills.
FIELD TRIP TO BEATTIE TECHNICAL SCHOOLThe students have been exploring the various programs of study at Beattie Technical Career Center. They have studied the programs through brochures and pamphlets from Beattie, and also by exploring the website - www.beattietech.com Each student was asked to choose one program of study that appealed to them. They wrote 4 - 5 sentences about why this program of study was of interest to them. Further research was completed at the Northland's Library in North Hills to gather additional information about their chosen program of study. The students were then able to eat in the cafeteria at Beattie and then participate in a tour of all of the programs there. We were able to observe two of the Life Skills students who presently attend Beattie and this was very exciting! These activities were designed to help the students explore more vocational options and to help them to find their vocational interests.
